Beyond the Boat: Unlocking the Global Importance of the River Exe
When you step aboard one of our vessels, you might just see the beautiful Devon countryside or the historic Topsham waterfront. But as we sail the tranquil waters of the Exe Estuary, we are navigating one of the most ecologically significant areas on the planet.
As a friendly, family-run business that has been sailing these waters for generations, we don’t just see the river as our workplace; we see it as our home. We are deeply proud of where we sail, and we want to share with you why this 10-mile stretch from Exmouth to Topsham is so crucial – not just to Devon, but to global conservation.
The Exe’s “Global Gold Standard”: A RAMSAR Site
If you are a regular reader of our blog, you may have seen us mention “RAMSAR.” It sounds specialised, but what it actually means is quite simple and hugely important.
A RAMSAR Site is an internationally recognized classification for a wetland of global significance. It is, essentially, the gold standard for environmental protection. It is a promise, made under a treaty signed in Ramsar, Iran, that an area will be protected and managed sustainably.
The River Exe was officially listed as a RAMSAR site because of its vital role in supporting internationally important numbers of wildfowl and wading birds. When you sail with us, you are sailing on a landscape that environmental scientists worldwide have prioritized for protection.
A Scientific Treasure: The SSSI Status
Furthermore, the area we navigate is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). This means it has been legally identified as one of the country’s best sites for wildlife.
The status covers the complex maze of mudflats, sandbanks, and eelgrass beds that characterize the estuary up to Topsham. While it looks like just mud when the tide is out, these nutrient-rich deposits are actually a vibrant, teeming nursery.
These specific areas are crucial because they host some of the most extensive eelgrass beds in the entire South West. Why does this matter? Eelgrass is the single most important food source for many wintering bird species. Without this protected SSSI-classified mud, the estuary couldn’t sustain the life that lives here.
Year-Round Importance: More than just a Winter Refuge
While our Guided Bird Watching Cruises are hugely popular in winter, the Exe’s importance doesn’t pause when the weather warms up. It is a common misconception that the river only matters during the wintering migration.
Here is the truth: The Exe Estuary is an essential habitat all year round, and each season reveals a different, equally vital purpose.
- Spring and Autumn: The “Service Station” for Migrants. During the spring and autumn, the RAMSAR-protected mudflats act like a critical refueling stop (the environmental equivalent of a service station). Thousands of birds, including Whimbrel and greenshanks, use the estuary to feed intensely and build energy for their incredible journeys between African wintering grounds and Arctic breeding sites.
- Summer: The Local Nursery. Even in the warm height of summer, the SSSI mudflats and reed beds are a safe haven. This is where many of our local resident birds, such as shelduck, ringed plover, and curlew, bring their young to feed, hide, and grow before they are ready to fledge.
Weaving in the Expert Knowledge (Friendly Value!)
Understanding the RAMSAR and SSSI classifications is fascinating, but it’s quite another thing to have them brought to life before your eyes. This is where our Guided Bird Watching Cruises truly add value.
While we want to ensure you always get the best value on your ticket, the real value on these trips comes from the passion and knowledge of our expert, local guides.
They know this river intimately. They will help you spot a bar-tailed godwit from a black-tailed godwit, but more importantly, they will explain why they are there. They explain the complex relationships between the tide, the SSSI eelgrass beds, and the arrival of the birds.
It isn’t just about ticking species off a list; it is about providing you with a deeper connection and understanding of the unique environment that we are so privileged to call home.
Experience it for Yourself
We hope this gives you a new perspective on your next trip with us. The River Exe isn’t just scenic; it is an irreplaceable environmental masterpiece, protected on a global scale. We invite you to join us, enjoy the view, and share our pride in this incredible RAMSAR and SSSI landscape on a River Exe Cruise.
Our friendly team looks forward to welcoming you on board soon.
