Key Stage 1

Many children in Key Stage 1 will not have stepped foot on a boat before and therefore we think it is important for children of this age to focus on the experience of being on a vessel and observing the environment around them.
The skipper will provide a commentary tailored to your group encouraging them to look at wildlife, boats on the river and Exmouth during their cruise.
We find that groups of young children enjoy shorter cruises that keep their attention rather than bore them. Therefore, as long as a vessel is available, we can offer 30 to 60 minute cruises. We also try our hardest to allow you your own area of the boat so that your children may express their excitement rather than be shushed!
The River Education pack contains an information sheet for the Class Teacher and supporters. There is also a worksheet that maybe suitable for during or after the cruise. For groups focusing on the Jurassic Coastline a similar resource pack is available.

Key Stage 2

A Boat Trip can be a brilliant kinesthetic learning tool. This unique learning environment can motivate even the most apathetic pupil. There is a wide choice of trips available from a Boat and Train Cruise to explore the Exe Estuary to a day trip to a local coastal town. Many school choose to investigate the environmental concerns of our coastline so exploring them by boat can actually ensure they are helping the environment.
As with Key Stage 1, resource packs are available on the River Exe and Jurassic Coast. We recommend that Key Stage 2 children have tasks to complete during their cruise as they will often sail with the general public.

River Exe Cruises £2.50 per person
Boat and Train River Cruise £3.50 per person
Cruise to Dawlish and return from Dawlish Warren £3.00 per person
Day Trip to Torquay, Brixham or Sidmouth £5.50 per person
Jurassic Coast World Heritage Cruise £4.50 per person

Safety Information

Stuart Line Cruises has an exemplary safety record and the River Exe is very shallow. All our boats are equipped with life jackets and life rafts and all crew trained in evacuation procedures. Should there be any emergency simply follow their instructions. All entrances and exits on the boats are secured before departing but leaders should note that this is a working boat often with other general public aboard and children should be supervised throughout any trip.

Head Counts
It is recommended that teachers perform a head count on arrival for their trip and once on board the vessel. It is also recommended just before and after departure off the boat. We recommend children are divided into groups with their own adult leader.

Safety Instructions
These are given by the skipper of the boat at the start of the trip. If you prefer it is also possible to give a safety announcement to your group on arrival at our booking office. We work in conjunction with the Water Safety Rules to ensure all children recognise that rivers and seas can be dangerous if not treated with respect.

Toilets
All our vessels have toilets on board. It is recommended that older children go in pairs to the toilets and younger with an adult.

Lost Children and First Aid
We hope you will find our boats to be very safe and therefore extremely difficult to loose your children aboard. If this does happen simply speak to a member of the crew. If you require First Aid please see either the skipper or a member of the crew. We carry First Aid Kits on board our boats. If you are sailing at sea it is recommended your group take medication if they are prone to travel sickness. Any case of seasickness should be treated with fresh air; small sips of water and a bucket. It is extremely rare for anyone to feel seasick on the river.

Food
Your party is welcome to consume lunch, drinks or snacks aboard our boats. Please make sure any rubbish is deposited in the litter bins and inform a member of crew in case of any drink spillage. There is a bar on board both boats selling hot and cold drinks, snacks and souvenirs. It is down to the discretion of the group leader whether children are allowed to purchase anything. We recommend only two or three children at the bar at a time.

Loading, Unloading and Mooring of the vessel.
To many passengers this will be as interesting a part of the trip as any but it also has the possibility for accidents. Please ensure your group remain seated while the boat leaves and enters the harbour and give the crew room to operate. Crew are present at all times for loading and unloading to ensure you are safe. If you require any help please ask them. The walkways and pontoons that we use can be slippery when wet so it is important for everyone to wear sensible shoes. Both our boats have wheelchair access but we request advanced notice of any group members who have difficulty walking or are in wheelchairs.

Above all we want you to enjoy your cruise.
Our staff are there to help you and your group - make use of them!
